Fans Useful Information

Ceiling Fans

Electrical

  • All models operate on 230 volt / 50 cycle electricity supply. The Power rating of the ceiling fan motors, range from 60 to 75 watts with 3 forward and 3 reverse gears.
  • Our ceiling fans operate on standard lighting wiring (two core and earth). They can be controlled by the pull switch(es) on the fan, a remote control or a single or double wall control. If you wish to install a double wall control then 3 core and earth is required.

Installation

  • Installing a ceiling fan is similar to installing a light fitting, but you must ensure that the blade tips are at least 20cm from any obstruction. Blade height should be at least 2.3m from the floor. The fixing point for the ceiling fan must be strong enough to hold 10 times the ceiling fan’s stationary weight.
  • Ceiling fans can be operated in summer for cooling effect or reversed in winter to re-circulate warm air trapped at ceiling level.
  • Running costs at high speed operation are less than that of running a 100wt light bulb for the same duration and even less for our low energy Fans.
  • Ceiling fans can be installed in any room (except bathrooms). In conservatories or rooms with high ceilings a drop rod and conversion kit may be required. Wall controls and remote controls are also available.

Choosing the size of the ceiling fan

  • When choosing a ceiling fan it is important to remember that it is more relaxing to run a larger fan on a slower speed than a smaller fan on high speed.
  • Our ceiling fans range in size from; 36”/91cm to 54”/137cm in diameter to suit any installation. We do not recommend the use of a 36” ceiling fan in a conservatory, as it would not be sufficient to affect the build up of heat that a conservatory creates. A conservatory installation may require a drop rod and conversion kit. A drop rod and conversion kit can be ordered separately for flush mounted fans.
  • The fan size guide below suggest the fan size most suitable for a particular room size.

    Room size                                                Fan size

12ft x 12ft (3.65m x 3.65m)                  36” / 42” (91cm / 107cm)

15ft x 12ft (4.75m x 3.65m)                  42” / 52” (107cm / 132cm)

20ft x 14ft (6.10m x 4.27m)                  52”          (132cm)

25ft x 12ft (7.62m x 3.65m)                  2 x 42”    (107cm) or 1 x 52” (132cm)

  • This size guide is based on rooms with ceilings of 8ft (2.43m). For rooms with higher ceilings a drop rod should be used to drop the fan down to 8ft (2.43m) above the floor. Should the room have abnormal heat conditions go to the next fan size up in relation to the above information.

Drop rods

  • Drop rods lower the fan to the required height above the floor. For conservatory installations where there is an apex shaped ceiling, the usual request we receive from a customer for the drop rod size is 18”, but your application may vary.

Conversion Kit

  • A conversion kit is required when changing a flush mount ceiling fan to a drop mount ceiling fan. The conversion kit will also allow the ceiling fan to be mounted on a slope of up to 40 degrees.

Remote control

  • A remote control is the popular way of controlling the ceiling fan and the lights, by controlling the 3 fan speeds and controlling the light as a dimmer. A remote control is ideal for a bedroom installation because you can control the fan speed and dim and turn the lights on and off from the comfort of your bed.
  • The remote control consists of a handset and receiver and can be installed in our full range of ceiling fans. You can even retro fit the remote control. The remote control cannot be used in conjunction with a wall control.

Wall speed control

  • A wall speed control is used to control the 3 speeds of the ceiling fan (requires 2 core and earth wiring).

Double wall speed control

  • A double wall speed control is used to control the 3 speeds of the ceiling fan and control the lights as a dimmer (requires 3 core and earth wiring).

All of the above information is intended as a guide only and you should consider all of the elements of your particular choice of product and its installation, before you commit an electrician to carry out any work.
