Lighting
Lighting is important, not only for its performance and aesthetic style, but also for the focal attention it can create within any room or space. We all accept the practical importance of lighting, but we must appreciate its creative potential. The correct choice of light fitting will enhance the area within which it illuminates. Good lighting can make the difference between a room being dull and bland to one that is sparkling with life. The most important element of good lighting is the quality of light; it’s colour, direction and intensity.
When selecting a lighting product, there are two primary factors to consider besides the amount of light, the style and colour of the light fixture and the desired effect of the light itself. The style comes down to a choice of period themes from the past to the future and the particular task that the light fitting has to fulfill. The colour and finish of the lighting fixture varies across the spectrum of metal finishes, paint colours and patinas from; brass, gold, chrome, polished, satin, brushed, stainless steel, antique, black, and silver to bronze amongst others.
Light
The desired effect of the light that is cast; depends on the light source, the shading around that light source and the secondary effect which is produced when the light reflects off surfaces. The reflective surfaces and the colours and textures of those surfaces are very important to the overall amount of illumination, for good light we need good reflection, light colours to walls reflect better and dark colours to walls absorb the light.
You need to consider the lighting effect that you are trying to create, bearing in mind the surfaces in that area. Light hitting a highly polished light coloured surface will reflect light back very well, whilst light directed to a matt dark surface will be almost totally absorbed. Therefore if you are lighting a room that has dark matt painted walls and dark furnishings and carpet, you will need to add more light to achieve a well illuminated space, likewise a room with high gloss light coloured paint, will require less light to illuminate the same space, due to the reflective capabilities.
You can create atmosphere in a room by combining different types of light, use direct lighting for reading, highlighters to create pools of light to accent pictures or art work and occasional lighting to create cosy areas within the room. When choosing the type of light fitting you wish to use, it is necessary to know what type of light is emitted from which light source. The light source, by that we mean the type of lamp used in the light fitting, it is a very important consideration regarding the amount of light created, together with the colour and intensity of the lamp and in some cases the beam angle. The shade around the lamp can effect the diffusion, intensity and importantly the direction of the cast light.
The main choices of lamp being; normal tungsten, energy efficient halogen, low energy fluorescent and the popular present choice of low energy LED, Tungsten lighting produces a warm comfortable light, which is ideal for areas to relax in. Halogen lighting produces a much whiter crisp light, closer to sunlight, which is especially ideal for kitchens and bathrooms, but can be used in all areas. Halogen lamps also show up true colours, which make them ideal for artwork, craft and reading tasks. Low voltage halogen lighting in the dichroic form, produces 30% more light than the mains voltage equivalent and produces a nicer, warmer, ambience of light. LED lighting is most efficient and can be used for all sorts of applications, from general and mood lighting to guide and task lighting. When there is an option; choose LED lighting and match the colour temperature to whether you want relaxed warm white or a more intense cool white to suit the desired setting.Generally one would use warm white throughout the house and cool white in the garden, but it is very much a personal choice.
Fluorescent lighting can be whiter than tungsten, but not as white or crisp as halogen, but fluorescent light, unlike tungsten and halogen, starts to deteriorate in colour and brightness from the first day of its operation. If you want fluorescent lighting for a particular application and you want whiter than white, try to obtain white tubes with a high phosphorous content.
LED lighting can be used for general lighting, guide lighting, mood lighting and feature lighting. LED technology is moving fast and is the light source of the present and foresable future, LED lighting is by far the most low energy and therefore has the most beneficial running costs. For LED lighting the measurement of the light output is denoted in Lumens and the colour temperature of the lamp is denoted in degrees Kelvin, the colour temperature of the light gives an indication of the warmth or coolness of the light source, 3000K to 4000K is a warm light suitable for a lounge area, 5000K to 6000K is a cool light more suited to a study or a working environment, where a brighter light is required.
Home Lighting
Lighting contributes to the mood and atmosphere of any area. When considering choices of light fittings for your home it is best to take each room individually and decide which light is best for you and which are the lights that are going to enhance your surroundings. You need to look at what the room is going to be used for, the purpose of the lighting and the light or dark colours of the reflective surfaces to ensure that you will have the correct levels of light for the tasks to be performed. Think about the look of the light fitting and how it should compliment the style and décor of your room. Consider the type of light output and the amount of light you need to ensure that you are also creating the correct mood for each area. Think about different levels of light on separate switches, so you can easily switch from bright lights to mood lighting if you so desire.
